Evangelical SyncretismI am astonished at how many evangelicals think that it is okay to observe a Ramadan fast with Muslims. Christianity Today has published remarks from ten evangelicals, five (or perhaps seven) of which think that it’s okay to fast with Muslims during Ramadan. Douglas Wilson is the last of the ten, and he sounds the clearest note against such a practice. He writes: “It is not appropriate to fast alongside Muslims. I wouldn’t make a point, if I were in a heavily Muslim state where everybody is fasting during the day, of fixing a hot dog and walking outside and eating it … but to observe R...

Understanding the New Atheism, Part 2: Attacks on the...Continuing his series on the new atheism, Dr. Douglas Groothuis explains and counters the new atheists’ claim that the New Testament is historically unreliable. The New Testament: Historically Untrustworthy? Part of the new atheism’s attack on religion and Christianity is not new at all — namely, its charge that the Bible is a collection of pre-scientific myths and legends. Beyond this, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris and others claim that the Bible gives downright immoral advice and should, therefore, be utterly rejected. While a short article cannot adequately...

Understanding the New Atheism, Part 1: The Straw GodThere’s a new kind of atheism these days, the proponents of which stand in adamant opposition to religion. Dr. Douglas Groothuis gives us a rundown of this “new atheism,” and shows us two key errors these new atheists make. A New Breed of Atheism “There is no God, and I hate him!” This seems to be the subtext for much of the “new atheism” propounded in books by Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens and others. What distinguishes this new breed of unbelief is, in part, its vehemence and vitriol. The gloves are off. Religion — all religion ...

CARM Gets it Right: A Response to a SDA – Objection...This entry is part 7 of 15 in the series SDA Propaganda RefutedRE: Objection 6 NOTE: Objection 6 is just a link to Glenn’s writings on the doctrine of Hell. As an SDA, he denies pretty much everything that the Bible (and Church history) teaches about Hell. I’ll have to address these writings separately in the future. RE: Objection 7 This is similar to Objection 6 in that the SDA believes that the archangel Michael was really Jesus. Glenn links off-site to an SDA website where you see a bunch of jumping around, non sequitors, and leaping to conclusions that, supposedly, prove that M...

CARM Gets it Right: A Response to a SDA – Objection...This entry is part 6 of 15 in the series SDA Propaganda RefutedRE: Objection 5 Glenn now moves away from the Sabbath issue and focuses on the rest of CARM’s page on SDA. CARM says CARM cannot recommend any church which would openly deny the biblical doctrine of predestination (in contradiction to Eph. 1:1-11). This is a pretty straightforward statement. The word “predestination” (Gk. προορίζω) is specifically used. But, alas, Glenn’s ignorance rears its head again (NOTE: Ignorance is not, ipso facto, a bad thing. It is willful ignorance that I am speaking of.)...
